-       Digital, RF and advanced 3D technologies to sustain 5G and IoT systems roadmaps

Grenoble (France) is well known for Micro and Nano electronics but it is also an attractive place for Optics & Photonics. CEA-Leti is part of the “Image Sensor Valley”, an ecosystem dedicated to Optics & Photonics melting engineering & academic research, key enabling technologies development, industrial companies world leader in their markets (including five image sensors fabs), small & medium businesses and start-ups. 300 researchers, engineers and PhD students are working in CEA-Leti in Optics & Photonics in a brand new building, for a total of 400 patents in portfolio (65 new/year) and a budget of 55 M€. Three clean rooms(8500 m2) sustain the activity: III-V and II-VI materials on versatile substrates, 200 mm for MEMS and packaging and 300 mm for CMOS and 3D integration, in addition to electro-optical test and characterization facilities.

This session will present recent achievements in the domains of research and technology transfer as Image Sensors (Visible, Cooled IR and UnCooled bolometers, THz), Optics & Photonics components as Displays, Solid-State Lightning, Sensors and Silicon Photonics

5G promises to be more a revolution than an evolution. Addressing vertical fields of applications like autonomous driving, smart city, factory-of-future, health… it will bring breakthrough connection density and global throughput while providing unprecedented levels of Quality-Of-Service including reliability, real-time and security. However, for achieving this target new technologies with better performances, lower power, mastered costs are required. In this talk, we will present what LETI proposes for solving the technical challenges faced by 5G.

CEA-Leti is a technology research institute in microelectronics and nanotechnologies; our ambition is to develop key technologies for the 5G components. We consider three major technological challenges of the 5G:

  • Contribute to the invention of communication systems in millimeter waves (mm-wave)

  • Provide innovative technology for the best flexibility in the use of spectrum resources

  • Inventing new models of roadmap for microelectronics and nanotechnology for the IoT

CEA-Leti teams work on three unifying frameworks:

  • Smart antenna systems

  • Virtualization of the digital radio platforms

  • Key enabling technologies for integration of the 5G features
