Oh Yes, Touching Triggers a Vibration, for Robots
Upbeat Technology developed its proprietary all-MEMS vibration sensor technology in 2023. Our initial focus was on detecting vocal cord vibrations near the ear region to enhance noise reduction performance in earbud applications. As development progressed, we discovered a wide range of compelling applications where vibration sensing can provide unique value.
One application that particularly captured our attention is robotics. In robotic systems, tactile perception is not limited to pressure alone — vibration sensing plays a critical role in detecting surface textures, material interactions, and slip conditions during object manipulation. This realization opened new opportunities for applying MEMS vibration sensing technology to next-generation robotic touch and perception systems.
Robot hand texture sensing is important because it gives robots a more human-like sense of touch. By detecting surface vibration, friction, roughness, and slip, a robot hand can better recognize materials, adjust grip force, avoid dropping objects, and handle delicate items safely. This capability is especially valuable for dexterous manipulation, industrial automation, service robots, and humanoid robots that need to interact reliably with real-world objects.
